Growth Mindset is a simple idea developed by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Professor Carol Dweck. Mindsets are the implicit beliefs we hold about our core abilities and intelligence. People with a fixed mindset believe that their ability and intelligence are largely fixed and outside their control, whilst people with a growth mindset believe that intelligence and ability are developed through hard work and effort over time. Having a growth mindset promotes curiosity and allows failures and setbacks to be viewed as necessary positive steps on the path to discovery and learning.
The growth mindset approach promotes resilience and personal responsibility, acknowledging each person’s role in controlling and accelerating their own learning journey, resulting in even higher levels of achievement. Professor Dweck has worked with RoyalABC to develop targeted materials in our programme that help students, parents and teachers build a growth mindset. Following an easy step-by-step guide, teachers are shown how to give feedback and create a learning environment that promotes a growth mindset. Growth mindset is the backbone of RoyalABC’s educational offering and is fully integrated into all areas of our programme, helping teachers to help their students learn English and excel at life and language.
